42nd IGAD Assembly addresses regional concerns, urges peaceful solutions

In a pivotal gathering on Thursday, January 18, 2024, the 42nd Extraordinary Assembly of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Heads of State and Government convened in Entebbe, Republic of Uganda. The focus was on the evolving situations in the Republic of the Sudan and the intricate relations between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Under the leadership of H.E. Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of the Republic of Djibouti and Chairperson of the IGAD Heads of State and Government, distinguished leaders including H.E. Dr. William Ruto of Kenya, H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan, and H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda attended.

The Assembly addressed the concerning developments between Ethiopia and Somalia, emphasizing respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and urging both nations to de-escalate tensions through constructive dialogue.

Expressing deep concern over the ongoing conflict in the Republic of the Sudan, the Assembly reiterated its commitment to promoting dialogue and negotiation. It called for an immediate ceasefire, stressing the Sudanese people’s right to a peaceful resolution and the primary responsibility of IGAD Member States in ensuring their will prevails.

The Assembly directed the IGAD Secretariat to update the Assembly on the conflict’s progress and, in coordination with the African Union Commission, revise the Roadmap for the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of the Sudan within one month. Furthermore, a Sudanese-led process towards a democratic government is set to be convened.

IGAD, in collaboration with the AU and the international community, was urged to mobilize support for the peace process in the Republic of the Sudan. The appointment of a High-Level Panel for Sudan by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission was welcomed, with a call for close collaboration with IGAD and other stakeholders in facilitating the peace process.

The Assembly concluded by affirming its commitment to actively monitor and address these critical regional matters.
