Museveni urges doctors to grasp prevention to save lives; calls for global affluence at South-South conference; MTN to sponsor Uganda Cranes; Ivory Coast frustrates Uganda’s CHAN efforts

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has emphasized the need to grasp the prevention concept in the health sector to ensure that 75 percent of diseases are prevented in Uganda. According to President Museveni, through public health, Medical Doctors can eliminate most of the sicknesses that affect citizens. The President made the remarks last week in Kampala while officiating at the luncheon meeting for a team of Medical Doctors and Engineers who were sponsored by State House to study at university.

“These are the facts because many of those sicknesses are preventable so you as the new generation you should really get that and make it part of your DNA in terms of professional services so that you help your people when you get a chance to avoid these sicknesses; diseases of ignorance such as malaria,” President Museveni said, adding: “Once you adopt this prevention method most of the diseases can be avoided for example, if you sensitize the communities where you will be deployed on how to use the latrines, sleeping under treated mosquito nets and using clean water.”

The Head of State also called on the scientists not to only concentrate on treating people but help the communities where they come from to develop and fight poverty by sensitizing them to embrace government programs, like the Parish Development Model and the four-acre model.

Call for global affluence

Address at the 2nd Africa high –level forum for South-South Triangular Co-operation for sustainable development – Munyonyo

Meanwhile the President has called on participants from member countries of the South-South Cooperation to work together to ensure global affluence for all their people.

Speaking during the closure of a 3-day South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development 2023 Forum at Speke Resort Munyonyo last week, President Museveni disclosed that in order to achieve global affluence, member states need to support each other by creating a sustainable market for their goods and services.

“It is now time to incorporate on ensuring affluence for all our people and what does it mean because when I produce a good or a service, we need a consumer to buy what I produce. If I produced a good or a service and nobody buys it, then I’m stuck, we cannot have affluence. It’s now time to address the issue of global affluence, we don’t want partial affluence in only a few countries. That is a system of parasites, we don’t want parasitism, we want symbiosis where people equally gain from working together,” Gen. Museveni said.

“The situation has now changed; China has now changed that cycle of poverty, they have built a fairly prosperous society, India, even some sections of the African population have gained affluence. However, that is not enough,” he added.

He also noted that member countries need to sustainably preserve the natural resources such as water bodies, forests, wetlands among others to fight climate change.

The President further commended the long-standing relationship that has existed between South-South member countries saying that they have collaborated since the times of fighting colonialism.

Gen. Museveni also used the platform to call for trade among the cooperation partners and North-South members, saying that this will address the challenge of the market for sustainable development.

He said Africa has lagged behind because of limited involvement in research and technology.

South-South and Triangular Cooperation is a development and humanitarian programming modality mandated by the Member States of the United Nations as articulated in numerous International Agreements and UN General Assembly resolutions.

Mobile telecom company MTN Uganda has announced a UGX 19 billion sponsorship with the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) over the next five years.

The announcement was made by the MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer, Sylvia Mulinge, at a media engagement ceremony held at the Kampala Serena Hotel, ahead of last week’s Uganda-Senegal match in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).

“This sponsorship signals our commitment to continue developing football in Uganda and supporting the Cranes ambition of flying our country’s flag high, everywhere they go,” Mulinge said. “We’re bringing back the game to Ugandans, who are the most passionate fans of our football”, Mulinge proudly added.

She elaborated that the sponsorship package will be used to support seven programs including the Uganda Cranes, the Crested Cranes, the FUFA Drum regional cup, the FUFA Juniors League, FUFA Super 8 tournament, the FUFA Super Cup, and the FUFA Annual Awards.

The new sponsorship deal includes support to the Crested Cranes, the national women’s team.

Cranes lose to Ivory Coast

Côte d’Ivoire overcame a stubborn Uganda 3-1 at the ongoing TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday to progress to the quarterfinals of the tournament in Algeria.

The result of the thrilling encounter at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers helped the Elephants to leapfrog previous group leaders Uganda to seal their place in the last eight.

Versatile forward Sankara Karamoko found the back of the net with a diving header from a well-taken Constant Wayou freekick on the right to beat the Ugandan defense that was caught offguard to give the Local Elephants a deserved lead in the 12th minute.

The Ivorians had kicked off the game on a high note asking questions that the Ugandans answered until that Karamoko effort changed the course of the game.

Just as the Ugandans seemed to have found their feet, Koffi Habib Cirille Ande made a fine run from the right side to send an incredible pass into the box to his Lys Sassandra teammate Vignon Ouotro who made no mistake and doubled the lead for the Ivorians who were cruising in the 27th minute, reports the official Confederation of African Football (CAF) website.

Waiswa pulled a goal back for the Cranes from the penalty spot in the 34th minute. Uganda were pushing for an equalizer in the second half but were caught on the break and Kouame added a third on 78.
