Tradition Meets Innovation in a Vibrant Celebration of East African Music at the Kalabash Festival

In the heart of Uganda, the live music scene pulsates with vibrancy, and the Kalabash Festival stands at the forefront, elevating local sounds and providing a platform for artists to shine. Born out of a desire to blend the traditional with the modern, the Kalabash Festival is a celebration of East African music, displaying a diverse lineup of local and international talent against the picturesque backdrop of Ragga Dee Beach in Busabala, Kampala.

Since its inception in 2018, Kalabash Festival has evolved from a monthly underground electronic night to a biannual extravaganza, attracting music lovers from far and wide. Organized by East African Records (EAR), in collaboration with local talents like Faizal Mostrixx and Fyah LeBoeuf, the festival has become a staple in Uganda’s festival calendar, offering a  blend of live bands and DJ sets that captivate audiences until dawn.

David Cecil, director of EAR, sheds light on the festival’s evolution and significance: “Kalabash started as a monthly underground electronic night, but with time, it has grown into a larger event, focusing on live bands followed by electrifying DJ performances. The festival serves as a platform for both upcoming and established artists to showcase their talents to a diverse audience.”

Reflecting on past editions, Cecil recounts the challenges and triumphs: “Despite logistical hurdles, the response to the relaunched editions has been overwhelming. From power failures to last-minute venue changes, each challenge has only strengthened our resolve to deliver an unforgettable experience. The March 2024 edition was particularly memorable, with hundreds of attendees dancing till dawn, fueled by the infectious energy of the performers.”

The Kalabash Festival is more than just a music event; it is a testament to the resilience and creativity of Uganda’s music industry. Cecil emphasizes the festival’s role in nurturing local talent and fostering a sense of community: “Festivals like Kalabash provide a platform for artists to reach larger audiences and showcase their music in a unique setting. It’s not just about the music; it’s about creating lasting memories and forging connections.”

May 25, 2024, marks the highly anticipated return of the Kalabash Festival, promising a day of musical discovery and family-friendly fun. The festival lineup features an eclectic mix of local and international acts, including DJ Vadim, Mr. Leo, DJ Dogu, Razoof, Binti Afrika, DJ Shiru, Vyper Ranking, Kvan, and more. Festivalgoers can expect a diverse range of musical genres, from electrifying DJ sets to soulful live performances, all set against the scenic backdrop of Ragga Dee Beach.

For attendees, Kalabash offers a day of immersive entertainment, with water sports, football matches, and a bouncy castle adding to the festivities. As the sun sets, the music intensifies, creating an electric atmosphere that’s bound to leave a lasting impression on all who attend.

Despite the challenges inherent in organizing festivals, Cecil remains optimistic about the future: “Festivals are a labor of love, but they also carry risks. We rely on the support of music enthusiasts to make these events a success. By attending Kalabash Festival, audiences not only support local artists but also contribute to the growth of Uganda’s music scene.”
