Uganda says not involved in internal conflict in DR Congo

Uganda has said the country’s army is not involved in the internal conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

A statement issued Thursday by the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye dismissed allegations by a DRC-based militia outfit, Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) also known as Wazalendo, that the UPDF was involved in the armed conflict in Rutshuru territory.

“The UPDF takes exception upon the falsehoods being spread by Mr Jules Mulumba (FDLR spokesperson) that the UPDF is in Rutshuru. In an attempt to authenticate his desperate claims, he uses photos of our force that were part of the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF),” Kulayigye said.

“The picture was taken when Uganda’s contingent to EACRF was in Tsengero general areas on Bunagana-Rutshuru to Goma Axis and not sake,” he added.

According to the UPDF, Wazalendo is “trying to justify their losses to M23 with such allegations”.

Wazalendo militias have been fighting alongside the Congolese national army against the M23 rebels.

“The UPDF has no reason to be involved in an internal conflict, except when it is a regional effort,” Kulayigye said.

Last December, the UPDF withdrew its contingent from the EACRF deployed in DRC in 2022.

However, the UPDF has another contingent deployed in parts of eastern DRC, which is hunting down Allied Democratic Forces rebels.

Dubbed Operation Shujaa, the UPDF deployed in 2021 and has been jointly working with the Congolese army to destroy ADF camps and rescue abductees.

The ADF terrorist outfit was formed in Uganda and has been fighting the government for more than 15 years.
